10th Annual Wine & Whiskers event benefitting The League for Animal Welfare

doggyWhat do you get when you mix artwork with animals, wine, tasty treats and shopping? That’s easy – you get Wine & Whiskers, one fantastically fun evening in an awesome venue for a wonderful cause! Proceeds from the League’s annual Wine & Whiskers event help ensure that they can continue to provide loving care and the security of a no-kill shelter for hundreds of homeless dogs and cats throughout Greater Cincinnati during the coming year.

This year’s Tenth Annual Wine & Whiskers will be held on Saturday, October 24, from 6 – 10 pm, at the Bell Event Centre in downtown Cincinnati. This beautiful building — formerly a church, with marble columns and arching stained glass windows — provides a unique setting for this elegantly casual evening.

Colorful framed artwork created by some of the League’s most talented canine and feline “paw-trists” will be on display, and the bidding on these masterpieces is bound to be “fur-ious.” (Okay, we’ll stop now, but you get the picture — or you might if you bid high enough!) Also, fabulous live and silent auction packages to choose from and bid on! New this year: Online registration and mobile bidding….purchase tickets and register your cell phone. You’ll be able to bid on silent auction packages and buy raffle tickets, or, personal shoppers will also be there to assist!

Signature cocktails will be there for the tasting, as will craft beers, fine wines and delicious offerings of heavy hors d’oeuvres with vegetarian and vegan options. You can enjoy these edibles and potables as you mingle with friends and fellow animal lovers… pet some adorable and adoptable pets.

Wine & Whiskers is a social event not to be missed! So be sure to mark your calendars and make your reservations now. Tickets are $100 per person when purchased in advance, and $120 after October 21. Tickets can be purchased at LFAW.myab.co.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is America’s Oktoberfest

IMG_7816Cincinnati is steeped in rich German Heritage – just ask one of the many German Societies in town who work hard at bringing that culture to the forefront. That’s why there’s no better place for an Oktoberfest than Cincinnati!

Starting in 1976on one city block, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is now a 16-city block extravaganza that is second only to the original Oktoberfest in Munich. Attended by over 600,000 people, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in German culture and heritage that makes Cincinnati, while enjoying fine food, beer and events that are fun for all ages.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati, presented by Samuel Adams, opens on Friday, September 18 at 5pm. The official opening ceremonies are at 11:30 am on Saturday, September 19 with the traditional tapping of the keg by Samuel Adams founder (and Cincinnati native) Jim Koch, followed by a procession through the city streets by members of the many German societies in town, dressed in traditional garb and carrying the flags of their particular German background.

But don’t think the festivities don’t kick off until Friday evening – be on Fountain Square at noon that day for the 9th Annual Running of the Wieners! 100 Dachshunds in hot dog costumes will be running races in heats of 10, and the winners of those will run one last race to crown the official King or Queen of the Wiener Dogs! This is a race not to be missed – the sight of all those wiener dogs in wiener suits is entertainment for the entire family. Fritz, the official Wiener Dog Mascot will be walking around for photo-ops and good times.

After the dogs have their day, Oktoberfest Zinzinnati continues with the Gemuetlichkeit (Goodwill) Games at 1:00pm, which features beer barrel rolls and beer stein races. And if that’s not your mug of beer, you can enjoy so many other activities, including the World’s Largest Chicken Dance. While the Grand Marshall has yet to be announced, past honorees have included Weird Al Yankovic, Nick and Drew Lachey, Joe Morgan and the Prince of Bavaria. Not up to getting your chicken on? Try this year’s new Mike’s Hard Tug of War, sponsored by Mike’s Hard Lemonade, on Sunday at 11am right in the street. You can also have fun at the Beer Stein Hoisting contest: a liter Stein is filled to the brim and you have to hold it up without so much as a waver of the arm. Not as easy as it looks! Oktoberfest Zinzinnati’s most unique event is the World Brat Eating Contest, with Joey “The Jaw” Chestnut coming in to defend his brat-eating crown. Show up to watch – if you’ve got the stomach for it!

There will be close to 40 food tents, where in the past they’ve sold 90,000 brats, 80,000 metts, 54,000 sauerkraut balls, 25,000 potato pancakes and tons of strudel and pretzels. New this year is Brewer’s Alley, where thirsty folk can enjoy micro brews from across the country as well as from right here in the Tri-State area. “It’s crowded, fork to fork and stein to stein, but everyone’s in a good mood and enjoying Oktoberfest,” says Pat Sheeran, VP of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.

Another highlight of Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is their Glockenspiel. Not your grandmother’s clock, this is an LED screen Glockenspiel that for 55 minutes of the hour looks like a regular clock, but at the top of the hour for 5 minutes lights up with graphics to accompany the dancers who come out to entertain the crowd.

Oktoberfest Zinzinnati is more than just a street festival, it’s a mega-event that’s a don’t-miss when you’re in Cincinnati. Sheeran asserts, “whether you’re German, or just German at heart, you’ll have a great time.” Raise a stein, savor a brat and let the good times roll!

A taste of success at the Western & Southern Open for Palomino

IMG_0891

Generally at the Western & Southern Tennis Open, you expect the food to be fun, to be tasty, but not necessarily to be fine-dining. But this year, Palomino Restaurant and Bar, located in Downtown Cincinnati, had their first appearance at the Open – and it was a Grand Slam.

Nelson Castillo, General Manager of Palomino, said the decision to participate at the Western & Southern Open was definitely the right one. “There was a huge impact, bringing fine-dining to the Open” said Castillo, who greeted many new visitors as they entered the tent at the ATP. During the week they were at the Open, reservations went up at the downtown restaurant, and more interest in the restaurant was expressed by so many. He saw lots of repeat customers throughout the week at the ATP…coming back again and again for the tasty offerings.

Palomino served up their Chop Chop Salad, Rigatoni Bolognese, Tiramisu, and the biggest hit of the week, Beef and Salmon Sliders. They sold over 750 dozen sliders, and the popularity spiked interest and sales, many ordering the full-size versions at the restaurant. Marketing of the restaurant in Key Magazine Cincinnati, radio, and at the Western & Southern Open really gave them a leg up.

“We will definitely be back at the ATP next year,” said Nelson Castillo…. “It was fantastic!”.

‘My Mind is a Camera’ exhibit at Art Beyond Boundaries

mind is a camera

Photography exhibits are often perceived as just being about what you see in the pictures themselves, but Art Beyond Boundaries is presenting an exhibit that’s also about the perception and thoughts of the photographer as much as what’s in front of the lens – welcome to My Mind is a Camera.

My Mind is a Camera will feature local and regional photographers – novice, amateur and professional – in this unique single-media exhibit, opening late August and running through October 16, 2015. Featured photographers include Melvin Grier, Ann Segal, Jymi Bolden, Jeanine Steel and J. Miles Wolf, among others. All photographers participating in the exhibit are aspiring to be a part of FOTOFOCUS 2016, a biennial celebration of all things photography. The theme of My Mind is a Camera ties in to the upcoming FOTOFOCUS theme of “The Undocument”, where photographers will compare documentary-style photography with the notions of realism and objectivity.

Art Beyond Boundaries is a professional fine-art exhibition venue, a place where local and regional artists with disabilities can display, market and sell their artwork. By promoting awareness and understanding of artists with disabilities, the gallery demonstrates to both the artists and the community that art transcends the limits. Located on Main Street in Downtown Cincinnati, visitors can stop by to view exhibits or go online at www.artbeyondboundaries.com and view their on-line gallery.

Don’t miss out on the chance to see this riveting exhibit, and delve into the minds and lenses of the photographers..
