A Portrait of Jewish Cincinnati

The Skirball Museum on the historic Cincinnati campus of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion is pleased to offer the exhibition A Portrait of Jewish Cincinnati in celebration of the Cincinnati Jewish Bicentennial November 4, 2021 through January 30, 2022. Jewish community life in the city of Cincinnati formally began with the founding of Chestnut Street Cemetery in Cincinnati’s West End in 1821.

A Portrait of Jewish Cincinnati brings together the likenesses of many of Cincinnati’s prominent Jewish citizens from the early 19th century to the present day, gleaned from the museum’s own rich collections as well as those of local and national museums and private collections. Portraits include oil paintings, sculptures, drawings, and mixed media representations of figures who have made a significant impact on Jewish Cincinnati and the larger secular community. Augmenting the portraits are several decorative arts objects, including a tall clock made by Joseph Jonas, Cincinnati’s first permanent Jewish settler, who was a jeweler and watch and clock manufacturer.

“Bringing together almost 40 works of art in celebration of 200 years of Jewish life in Cincinnati has been an incredible journey of discovery and learning for the Skirball Museum staff,” comments Skirball director Abby S. Schwartz. “From Fanny and Abraham Aub, the couple who gave the land to build the second home of Cincinnati’s Jewish Hospital—the first in the country—the stories told by these portraits are colorful and diverse and will engage viewers of all backgrounds.

Street City gets an upgrade

Street City has a secret…shhh! Enter through the front doors to the expected friendly service of a local pub but step a little further in and you will discover our new “Unexpected” lounge.

We’ve redesigned our interior to provide a new experience. You’ll enjoy a room full of inspired murals by local artist, Taaj Richardson. Taaj is a student at the University of Cincinnati who fulfilled his curriculum by transforming our lounge. Owner, Nelson Castillo’s vision for the lounge is to create a space for locals and tourists alike to spend their evenings chill and relaxed with good bourbon, good friends, and good service.

The center stage mural is a depiction of the main hall at the Aronoff center just across the street. The Aronoff is a favorite partner of ours and although we are differing industries, we complement each other to provide desirable destinations for your evenings. Extended from the painting is our own stage where we feature local artists for live music and entertainment. Start your entertainment at one and continue with the other, all within the same block, both feeding the soul of this beloved city.

The barrel mural is a reflection of the “Unexpected” transition of the bar lounge to the bourbon lounge. Just as in the days of prohibition, speakeasies were often found behind the expected store front. In our Unexpected lounge, bourbon is king and the rows of mural barrels showcase this. Consider joining our Bourbon club – coming soon!

P.S. For all you theater goers, check out our new gourmet Four Course Meal for just $46 available all day every day and a perfect pairing for your pre or post theater meal.

Freedom to travel!

Just in case you might think that the global pandemic was slowing resort development, it would seem nobody’s stopping anything in Cancun and the Riviera Maya. I recently visited the newly opened Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun the first week of operation and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The service, food, activities and décor a 5 star delight! Not to mention the 9 pools, 17 restaurants and stunning beachfront.  It is so encouraging to see the all-inclusive industry continue to expand with many new properties by several organizations slated to open this year and early 2022.

All-inclusive Resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico are offering the safest and easiest travel experience.

For now, all travelers entering the US will need to acquire a negative antigen test before boarding the plane. Sounds like a hassle, right? Wrong if you chose the right hotel!  Most of the all-inclusive luxury properties are offering the test on property at no cost to the traveler!  The concierge sets up your test a day or two before you depart, and you receive your negative result for you to present to the airlines. And even more important and impressive, if you would test positive, these resorts will keep you in a designated area of the resort for the 10-14 days of quarantine with meals delivered all at no cost!

Luxury all-inclusive resorts such as the one mentioned previously are pulling out all the stops to provide a safe and healthy vacation environment. Boost your immune system with the vitamin D, fresh air, exercise, and positive energy! ENJOY!!
